Helping our
Students to Achieve:
The Role of a Board of Education Member – A
Daunting Task
Board members are
community leaders who provide an invaluable resource as local
decision makers. Their job is to meet the needs of the Thomaston
community, while servicing the needs and interests of Thomaston
children.
Board members are
Volunteers who give countless hours of time and talent for the
benefit of education. As citizens who serve children and their
community, they face complex and demanding challenges. Yet, I
believe that few people understand the scope and far-reaching
implications of their broad-based responsibilities. What are some of
these responsibilities?
establishing a
vision for our education program
designing and
implementing a plan to achieve that vision
constantly making
accountability assurances to the community
continuously
advocating for improved student learning
attending
countless meetings and events while reading endless reams of reports
and documents
extending
accountability to the public and making assurances that money
allocated to our schools is providing a good return on the
investment
Our school board
members are ordinary people who have an extraordinary dedication to
our Thomaston School System. It is time we thanked them for their
untiring efforts and recognized that in the tradition of a
representative democracy, school board members are our connection to
influencing how our public schools are governed.
